Visa Requirement
Do South African Citizens Need a Visa for Dubai?
The honest answer depends on what else is in your passport. There are now two possible paths for South African travellers:
Path 1 — New limited visa on arrival, since 25 June 2026: The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, also known as ICP, confirmed that South African ordinary passport holders, along with accompanying family members, can now obtain a visa on arrival — but only if they hold a valid, unexpired residence permit issued by the United States, a European Union member state, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada. Without one of these qualifying permits, this option does not apply to you.
Under this new rule, eligible South African travellers can choose a 14-day visa on arrival, with an issuance fee of AED 100 and one possible extension while inside the UAE, or a 60-day visa on arrival, with an issuance fee of AED 250, single stay, and no extension. Overstaying either one attracts a fine of AED 50 per day. This applies at any UAE port of entry, including Dubai International Airport.
Path 2 — Pre-approved Dubai visa, for everyone else: If you do not hold a qualifying foreign residence permit, the visa-on-arrival option is not available to you, and the position is the same as it has always been: you need a Dubai or UAE visa approved before you fly. This is the route that applies to most South African travellers, and it is the service Dubai Visa Center specialises in.
Because eligibility depends on your specific passport and residence-permit situation, South African passport holders should verify their own eligibility before booking travel, either through Dubai Visa Center or directly with UAE immigration.
